Lucy — Ape-Inspired Robotics Platform

I joined KAIRA in August and am currently helping with the mechanical development of Lucy, an ape-inspired robot. The team is also building a broader robotics platform around the project.

Context

KAIRA is developing Lucy as an ape-inspired robot alongside a broader platform for building and testing intelligent machines. The immediate engineering challenge is to turn an ambitious embodied-robotics concept into mechanical architecture that can be built, integrated and iterated without constraining the sensing, actuation and intelligence that will follow.

My work

  • Joined KAIRA in August 2026 and am currently contributing on the mechanical side of Lucy.
  • Supporting the robot’s early mechanical development as the team defines its structure, mechanisms and hardware interfaces.
  • Building system context across KAIRA’s broader robotics platform so mechanical decisions remain compatible with future sensing, actuation and control.
  • Preparing to contribute to the physical-AI side as Lucy and the shared platform mature.

Notes / next

What I learned

  • In early embodied-robotics work, clear interfaces and testable assumptions matter more than premature detail.
  • Physical AI depends on a mechanical platform that is reliable, observable and designed for iteration.
  • Joining a new robotics team means building shared system understanding before narrowing into a single specialty.

Next

  • Contribute to Lucy’s mechanical architecture, prototypes and integration interfaces.
  • Help document the assumptions connecting mechanisms, actuators, sensors and computation.
  • Move toward physical-AI development as the robot and platform become ready for learning and control experiments.
